3Fun: Data Hack of 2019
- Real-time location, in-app conversation history, and private photos got leaked
- Hack was caused by poor information security
- Site's developers worked to fix the vulnerabilities of the site and tighten security
A study conducted by Pen Test Partners has brought to light 3Fun's poor information security. Ken Munro, the founder of PenTest, stated that the dating app probably had the worst security he had ever seen.
It had been discovered that the app was leaking real-time location, photos, conversation history, sexual preferences, age, username and other sensitive data of any nearby user.
Pen Test Partners' researchers found the app was leaking users' precise location, photos and other personal details. It was even more troubling when the researchers found out that they could plug in any coordinates they wanted to spoof their location or reveal more sensitive information within the location they choose.
Upon hearing these findings, the developers of 3Fun doubled down on their security, fixed any vulnerabilities of the site, and reinforced tighter security measures. The app now has more security safeguards compared to back in 2019.

3Fun works to match you with people you would have the most in common with. The more detailed you are with your profile, the better the recommendations will be. This works especially when it comes to matching you with people who share the same kinks and sexual preferences.
As soon as you finish registering on 3Fun, the site provides you with tons of recommended profiles based on your match preferences. Take note that in order to Like or Pass on these recommended profiles, you have to upload public or a private photo.
If you like someone and they happen to "Like" you back as well, you get a match. You can find more information about your match here: Bottom navigation bar > Prospects > Matches.
You can also choose to upload a private photo instead, should you want to keep your online activity discreet, and get your profile verified. On this site, uploading photos are an integral part of accessing the site's contacting features.
Profile quality ★★★★★ 2.0/5
- Uses AI to detect fake profiles
- Profiles are moderately detailed
- Profile pictures are visible to everybody for free
- You can edit your profile information later
3Fun had taken the initiative to use AI (artificial intelligence) program to identify and remove fake profiles. 3Fun boasts to be the first casual dating site to use this kind of technology.
This AI automatically removes catfishers who use fake photos created by Snapchat filters and other similar software. Since casual dating sites are known to be filled with fakes, bots, and scammers, having this another layer of security puts users at ease.
The program is also capable of identifying stolen profile pictures as well as nude photos.
Additionally, 3Fun features a mandatory manual verification system which ensures that every profile has to undergo a manual verification.
This manual process programs the AI software to learn patterns and features of the data input with fast and intelligent algorithms.
Special features
3Fun has a few special features that will make the experience much more fun for its users. Here are some of them:
Like or Pass +
Find a match as you Like or Pass on suggested profiles. Take note that you should have uploaded a photo in order to access this feature.
Couple Access +
Couples can chat synchronously with others by using the same account. This comes in handy if two partners sharing the same account want to use their own mobile devices to chat together with a third person. They don’t need to create separate accounts to do that.
Constant in-app scanning +
3Fun has upgraded its security features and has implemented a constant in-app scanning of fraudulent activities to prevent romance scams and catfishing. Potential scammers are immediately investigated and, when appropriate, removed from the app.
Incognito Mode and Block Contacts +
3Fun’s new improvements build off of an earlier round of security updates to enhance and encrypt sensitive user information. Those updates included a pair of important user-powered features: “Incognito Mode” and “Block Contacts.” Members can now browse anonymously and block suspicious users from their accounts.
